I'll see your Montenegro, and raise you a Faroe

Even smaller than Montenegro are the Faroe Islands, which have a population of 47,000 and have had self-government within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. The Faroes are so independent, there are clauses in the Treaties of Rome specifying that the Islands are not part of the EU even though they are part of Denmark, which is.

Years ago I studied at the European Film College in Ebeltoft. People from different countries would hold cultural evenings, giving their fellow students a taste of life back home. I used to recite Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Bob Delyn lyrics, and claim they were works of medieval Welsh poetry which I had committed to memory. Sigri and Rani from the Faroes had a Faroese cultural evening. It mainly seemed to involve carving up whalemeat and getting people to eat it semi-raw.

I didn't partake. But the canteen stank for days.

Well, I could mention Vatican City which is the smallest independent nation in the world. Population of 951, low crime rates, low birth rate, no unemployment 100% literacy rate. They manage themselves alright. Oh yes, and with the help of many millions of pounds and with a firm hold on many of the world's poorest countries.
